Global Warming

Global warming is caused by the extensive emissions of different greenhouse gases (specially carbon dioxide (CO2)) in the atmosphere by human forces, which are helping to trap the heat from the sun and to raise the temperature of the Earth.

The last final report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) established that the levels of Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have risen by one third since industrial times, and are expected to double in the next hundred years.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are one of the main causes of global warming.
We all contribute to global warming because we all produce CO2, methane gas, and nitrous dioxide. The emissions of CO2 are caused by almost everything we do, such as driving, flying, heating our homes, watching TV, and even cooking, and with the accelerating process of industrialization, the use of technology and the rise in the demand for energy we are helping to increase the earth's temperature.

In 1997, as a response to the worsening climate change problem and in an attempt to mitigate the effects of global warming, the Kyoto Protocol emerged as an international effort to reduce current Green House Gas emissions to a level 5.2% below the level in 1990. But these commitments only obligate the countries, and not individuals. For this reason, we all need to take individual action to do our part to stabilize the earth's temperature.  As individuals interested in building a better place to live and a better place for our children and their children to live, we are morally obligated to act.

The International Panel for Climate Change has estimated that we need to reduce GHG emissions to 40% of 1990 levels if we are to have any hope of stabilizing the earth's climate. To be effective, this effort cannot only be made by states and countries. We all have a responsibility to our planet and we now have the opportunity to take actions that will help mitigate the effects of global warming.
